Hello World! FINALLY, I've managed to figure out how to create a gif via photoshop instead of relaying on Melanie, my younger sister who writes = HERE. 

Acrylic paint has always been my favorite medium to use as it is easy to control, fun to use and it can be easily painted over and over again if i ever make a mistake, which (sadly) occurs often! But with 'The Silly Boats', i decided to get out of my comfort zone and use watercolour as it is the best medium to achieve the 'drippy' and translucent effect.

Even though the composition is very similar to my previous work called the 'I am a Paper Boat that never sinks', click here to view, the 'The Silly Boats' is painted on a much bigger scale, it included two boats instead of one and most of all it contains a different meaning of the painting.

'The Silly Boats' was painted as a birthday gift for Ed that came 1.5 months late, oppsy :) ! Ed wanted a few of my previous paintings but i never really wanted to give away paintings that were meaningless to the him and to both of us. 

The two Paper Boats sailing peacefully on harsh waves depict our friendship and unique bond that is seemingly impossible to be broken or shaken. I see Water as a powerful element and Paper as a fragile material, by combining these two together i hope audiences are able to see the contrast and the strong mutual understanding and respect that these two silly boats have for each other!

When i was younger, i was very careful (in other words, stingy) and selective with where and when i use my polaroid camera as instax films are very expensive especially to a jobless teenager like me.

But in 2015, i became more generous with my instax films as i fell in love with capturing candid moments of my friends & family and watch it magically develop instantly in my hands, by itself. Every single shot is so precious and intentional that i can't help but to have a nostalgic feeling whenever i browse through them. The rustic and whimsical effects are also what make it more unique.

Modern photography has enabled us to capture multiple shots of a composition in just a few seconds, allowing us to have the privilege to pick the best among the other 2000 pictures of the same frame and of course touch up before uploading them else where. It can be a blessing but sometimes i prefer pictures that are RAW!

There is something about painting that makes me feel content and calm when the world seems too crazy to be handled by a troubled child like me. After 21 years of living,  I still get that blissful feeling and that special sort of tranquility when I unwrap my colouring materials, maybe that is what they call it  : PASSION. 

Juhanna Basford's colouring book caught my attention when I was in a gallery shop with my loved ones. After a peek into the 'Secret Garden', without hesitation, I went to the cashier with 20 dollars in my hand , eager to unleash the inky treasure hunt that Johanna has prepared for us, because oh boy it has been too long since I left the digital world!

I decided to paint this particular floral piece based on one of my favorite quotes , '... Sometimes things don't come full circle' from the track 'Arcadia' by The Kite String Tangle introduced by Kizzy. The song was on repeat throughout the months as I cannot help but fall in love with the quote again and again, as it reminds me that:

'Despite the fairytale endings we were brought up to expect from life, things are not always complete, not always whole. The dog doesn't always catch its tail, the single thread doesn't always complete a stitch. Things are not always perfect, and does not always follow its intended course, but that's okay. Arcana

My artwork, basically, is a metaphor of the life of a student in an international school. Rather than portraying the story in a realistic manner, I incorporated my interests in fantasy and illustration and produced the adventure in the form of a storybook. The story covers the journey of two individuals, the first being the new kid, and the other, the veteran. The inspiration came from personal experiences and the journey of my peers in AISM. As an individual who has been in AISM for 5 years, I have witnessed friends come and go, leaving fond memories but at the same time reclaiming part of the joy as they venture into new environments.

ARTIST STATEMENT:  

"Love?"

Like all sports, it begins with interest and curiosity and is then further developed with the love for the sport.

All tennis players or fanatics would be familiar with the beginning of every tennis match where the score is set at '0-0' (love all). Psychologically, the same concept can be linked to the actual match where it begins with the basic love for the sport. However, once the atmosphere becomes more intense and the crowd decides which player to support, love is lost and is replaced with the need to obliterate the opponent.

The concept behind my artwork was to encompass and emphasize the passion and determination that players have in the game of tennis. The game surpasses merely hitting a ball past the net into the opponent's court, as it requires more than skill alone to play the mentally and physically challenging sport. The pieces come together as a whole to portray every aspect of tennis, power, passion, tension, and rivalry.

As a tennis player myself, i was inspired by the ability of tennis professionals, especially the women and their ability to play with both power and grace.

Don’t wake me up

‘Some Dream to escape reality. Some dream to change reality forever.’

Do you dream to escape reality?  I do.

Being an international student, I often dream, dreams of escaping my reality, where I feel lost in this alien world which is so different from my native country, Turkey. My body of work illustrates dreams that we dream of while sleeping or even when we are awake. We tend to daydream of things that we want to happen and you catch yourself smiling. The figures that I used for my project are falling figures, which represent that escaping reality is only possible when we sleep and are quickly jolted awake by realism.

Where Do I Go Now? 

My trip to Sapa, Vietnam in 2009 with my family was undoubtedly the most eye opening experience and contains the most valued moments of my lifetime. With little and perhaps no knowledge of their culture and lifestyle in Sapa, I faced culture shock as the place is very different from my living conditions and the way I visualized it. However, having visited Sapa and given the chance to interact with the minorities for the first time have unquestionably allowed me to appreciate and understand the philosophy of Simple Living.

The children in Sapa in particular have touched my heart and lingered on my mind the most. I was really surprised with their optimistic pride and resilience, and their eagerness to explore the world and simply live a kid's life. By observing their lifestyle, it made me realize that sometimes the poorest places on earth are the lands rich in culture, filled with warm people who are able to find joy in life without the influence of consumerism. However, I discovered that there is more to life in Sapa than meets the tourist's eye.
